Shade Smith
MSc, Marine Scientist

After graduating from the University of Auckland Shade spent time working as an Aquaculture Scientist in Nelson, New Zealand. Here he worked on selective breeding programmes for Greenshell mussels and Pacific oysters and gained much experience in daily operations of a commercial and research hatchery. A move to Napier and employment as a field officer brought Shade into close working relationships with regional aquaculture and fisheries stakeholders, including Maori organisations, private companies and government agencies. Moreover his diving credentials saw him working on a variety of projects from open ocean aquaculture research to assessments of environmental effects on the marine environment. Since joining EAM as a company director his focus has expanded to include providing environmental management solutions.

Shade also has a special interest in the empowerment of indigenous peoples to become more involved and productive in providing marine resource management solutions.
