Marine environments are influenced by both natural processes and human impacts, however often one can exert an undue influence. In marine habitats around towns and cities human impacts are particularly pronounced. In these areas anthropogenic, or human induced, effects such as sedimentation, dredging, pollution, nutrient enrichment and invasive species can have major effects on marine ecosystems.
As our coasts, beaches and harbours are increasingly subjected to human influences, the integrity of these ecosystems can become compromised. The increased desirability and value of coastal areas, and recognition of the inherently high values in healthy, functional ecosystems means that immense scrutiny, from both regulators and the general public alike, is placed on any developments or activities occurring within these areas.
Therefore the ability to assess potential impacts and monitor any effects, using robust, defensible science provides not only a better understanding of how an ecosystem operates but can promote sustainable development by providing advice on how best to avoid, remedy or mitigate adverse effects.
